Civitas Seeks Voter Roll Evaluation In Watauga, Five Other Counties (2016-12-30 14:11:46)

The Civitas Institute has sent letters to the NC State Board of Elections and boards in six counties, including Watauga, requesting a thorough examination of voter rolls and full compliance with section 8 of the National Voter Registration Act.

The Civitas Institute’s press release said “Shoddy registration and verification practices in North Carolina have resulted in reports of voter rolls fraught with ineligible voters, unverified voters, active felons, and voters who don’t live in North Carolina.”

According to the News and Observer of Raleigh, Civitas says that state elections officials allow ballots to be counted even after two efforts to verify the voter’s address by mail failed. The letter argues the practice “threatens to taint the integrity of the electoral process.”

In addition to Watauga and the North Carolina State Board of Elections, Civitas sent letters to Wake, Durham, Buncombe, Bladen and Pasquotank counties. Civitas said those counties were chosen in an effort to review election practices across the state and for the most part do not relate to specific incidents in the counties.
