A Charlotte man has been convicted in Watauga County of trafficking heroin.

According to District Attorney Seth Banks, a Watauga County jury found Avery Tyrez Forney, age 24, guilty of two counts of trafficking heroin and one count of conspiracy to traffic in heroin.

The convictions come after an undercover investigation by the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office worked with a confidential informant to arrange the delivery of two ounces of heroin from Charlotte. The suspect and two others arrived in town and when confronted by law enforcement they threw heroin and a gun from the vehicle and led authorities on a high speed chase into downtown Boone, before being stopped by Boone Police and apprehended.

Superior Court Judge Gary M. Gavenus sentenced Forney to a minimum of 37 years and a maximum of 47 years in prison and a fine of $1.5 million dollars.
