Historic Winter Storm Continues To Impact High Country (2018-12-11 16:26:39)

The High Country is coming off a severe snowstorm that lasted Saturday night into Monday morning.

The National Weather Service reports total snow accumulations got above 20 inches in certain areas of Ashe, Avery and Watauga counties.

The storm rivals the highest single day snow total in Boone, which Watauga Online reports was 19 inches in January of 1998.

The winter storm caused many power outages, as well as many school, office and business closings.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation had crews on in 24-hour rotations to keep up with maintaining the roads.

The Watauga Democrat reports Boone Police received calls for 56 stranded drivers, and Watauga Communications received calls for 16 stranded drivers and two accidents with property damage.
