The Mountaineers May Have Their Man.... (2018-12-13 01:37:26)

Well, at least that's the rumor going around Wednesday night. Apparently, Appalachian State Athletic Director Doug Gillin may finally have the pieces in place to name his new football coach.

Unfortunately, his original plans fell through late Sunday night, when North Carolina State offensive line coach Dwayne Ledford pulled his name out of consideration, and joined former App State coach Scott Satterfield at Louisville. But now it seems Gillen has his man.

And that guy seems to be, at least for the moment, Alabama assistant coach Josh Gattis, who is a North Carolina native. He was born in Durham. He played college football at Wake Forest, and he played in the National Football League with the Jacksonville Jaguars (they selected him in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL Draft), and the Chicago Bears.

Now, keep in mind, if Gattis is the guy, that appointment still has to be approved by Appalachian State University's Board of Trustees. And ironically, all those nice folks have a meeting scheduled Thursday morning. What a coincidence, hmmmm.

Anyway, if Gattis is appointed, he comes to town with some solid credentials, especially as a recruiter (as a matter of fact, he was doing some recruiting with Alabama coach Nick Saban this past week). And before he made his stop in Tuscaloosa, Gattis spent six seasons under James Franklin at Penn State. He was the wide receivers coach for  four of those years. He spent one season at Alabama as a co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach.

The word was that Gattis was headed to Maryland as the Terrapins next offensive coordinator, where he would be reunited with newly appointed Maryland coach, Mike Locksley, who was Alabama's offensive coordinator this past season. But according to Fox Sports, that story was inaccurate. Gattis was also mentioned as a candidate for the Temple head coaching job.

But Fox Sports keeps insisting that Gattis' name is linked to the App State head coaching job. Oh by the way, App State supposedly has a press conference scheduled for Friday. Let's wait and see what happens. But if Gattis is the guy (and all signs are pointing in that direction), Gillin has made an excellent choice.

Stay tuned....
