Newland Alderman Killed In Auto Accident May 31 (2018-06-06 16:06:42)

Newland Board of Aldermen member Joleta Wise was killed in an automobile accident last week.

The Avery Journal reports the accident happened Thursday May 31st between Crossnore and Pineola.

Authorities received a report of a reckless driver on Highway 221 near Crossnore Drug Store and Lee Buchanan of the Avery County Sheriff’s Office came upon the head on collision.

Highway Patrol Trooper G.W. Edwards said Wise was traveling north in a 2015 Fiat 500 on U.S. 221 when she crossed over the center line and collided with a 2005 Jeep Cherokee traveling south, driven by James Hudson.

According to Edwards, Wise was determined to be at fault in the collision, and said both vehicles were traveling at approximately 45 to 50 miles per hour with no braking evident at the time of the collision.

Edwards said alcohol was suspected in the incident, as an open container and a sealed container of alcohol were found in Wise’ vehicle.

Hudson initially refused treatment but later went to Cannon Memorial Hospital and was transferred to Intensive Care at Johnson City Medical Center.
