Watauga County Election Results Official, No Changes (2016-11-25 13:46:04)

The Watauga County Board of Elections' canvass on Nov. 22 has certified local election results as official, and there are no changes to the results.

The Watauga Democrat reports that voter turnout came in at 65 percent in Watauga.

However, the North Carolina Governor’s race remains in question. As of Wednesday, Roy Cooper's lead over Gov. Pat McCrory had increased to about 6,300 votes after approval of provisional ballots, but, the McCrory Campaign has called for a recount and a lawsuit has been filed by the conservative-leaning Civitas Institute.

The State Board of Elections is scheduled to hold its canvass November 26th, but Civitas contends that the SBOE cannot certify election results until same-day registrations are verified by mail, and SBOE guidelines indicate 30 days should be allowed for the mailing process.

The last day of same-day voter registration was Nov. 5, and Civitas says that vote counts cannot be finalized before Dec. 7.
