Ashe County Sheriff James Williams To Step Down (2016-11-22 15:54:24)

Ashe County Sheriff James Williams will step down December 31st.

According to the Jefferson Post, Williams announced his retirement to the board of commissioners Monday morning. His department’s next highest ranking officer, Bucky Absher, will take over as sheriff until commissioners make an official appointment for the office.

Williams was elected to his post in 2006 and ran unopposed in 2010. In his retirement letter to the board, Williams noted it has been a “great honor” to serve the people of the county, and  “especially rewarding to serve citizens as sheriff for the past 10 years.”

Williams cited the growing stress of the job and the current status of the sheriff office as his reasoning for retiring.
