Ground was broken this week on the new agricultural building in Newland.

The Avery Journal reports the new 5700 square foot building at Heritage Park will be the new home of the Avery Cooperative Extension Service and will contain offices, a wet lab and a teaching kitchen.

The ground breaking ceremony was held Monday November 27th and the contract calls for the building to be completed in May of 2018, and the extension service staff move in set for June.

According to the report, the county will fund the offices and administrative portion of the building while Avery Extension Director Jerry Moody will be working with a capital development group to raise funds for developing other parts of the property, possibly including a community garden, a livestock pavilion, aquaculture facilities and equestrian trails.
