Late Score Pushes Troy Past App State, 28-24 (2016-11-13 00:52:19)

TROY, AL - Jordan Chunn scored on an 11-yard with 1:02 left to play, capping off an eight-play, 85-yard drive as Troy University knocked off Appalachian State 28-24 Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Troy quarterback Brandon Silvers connected with Sidney Davis for 43 yards on fourth down as the Trojans answered a 5-yard touchdown run by App’s Jalin Moore with 3:29 to play in a back-and-forth second half with the driver’s seat in the Sun Belt on the line.

“They ran a curl wheel on the side line and got one on one coverage over there," said App State coach Scott Satterfield. "Great throw by the quarterback. Great catch. We pass interference on the catch and he still caught the football, which put them down here in the red zone and they ended up scoring. Players make plays. I think you look at games like this and coaches can call this play and that play but it’s ultimately that players make plays. Their kids made more plays than we did tonight. They played to win the game.”

The win, along with Arkansas State's 41-22 win over New Mexico State, leaves the Trojans (8-1 overall, 5-0 Sun Belt Conference) and the Red Wolves (5-4, 5-0) in a first-place tie in the SBC standings. The loss drops App State (7-3, 5-1) into third place with two games left on the schedule.

Moore scored with 3:29 left ot play, giving the Moutaineers a short-lived 24-21 lead. Saturday's game featured five lead changes and a tie. The Mountaineers overcame an early 14-0 deficit to tie the game at 14-14 Moore's 32-yard scamper with 6:06 left in the first half.  Safety A.J. Howard ripped a completion away from Troy’s Sam Letton and raced 71 yards for the Mountaineers’ first score.

Moore led the Mountaineers with 91 yards on 16 carries. Quarterback Taylor Lamb was 14-of-28 for 167 yards with an interception. Marcus Cox played, but was held to just 50 yards on 16 attempts.

Chunn paced the Trojans with 129 yards on the ground, and Troy piled up 416 yards offensively, including 187 on the ground. Silvers was 21-of-35 for 229 yards and a TD pass.

Michael Rubino’s career long 47-yard field goal in the third quarter gave App a 17-4 lead, but Silvers came back with a 51-yard touchdown run as Troy took the lead back at 21-17.

“It’s all about how you want to finish," Satterfield said. "I think that’s the biggest thing. We’ve got to finish strong. We’ve got two more games and who knows. They’ve got three more games. There’s a lot of ball left to be played in college football season. We see the stuff that happens each and every week. we’ve got to take care of our business and that’s coming back at home next week playing a good Monroe team and winning the game. It’s about how we finish this season and we’ve got to finish strong.”

Saturday's loss also broke App State's seven-game winning streak in the SBC, and it was App State's first road loss in league play since 2014 at Georgia Southern (by a 34-14 score), snapping their nine-game road winning streak.

The App returns home for senior day next Saturday against UL. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
