AppHealthCare received a $100,000 grant from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to fight opiate and substance abuse.

The Watauga Democrat reports the funds came from a $4 million cooperative agreement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to the report, AppHealthCare will use the grant money to strengthen treatment, recovery services and harm reduction for people with opiate and substance use disorders.

AppHealthCare also plans to launch a peer-support specialist program in Ashe and Alleghany counties, and to strengthen connections with law enforcement and the syringe exchange program currently being developed in Watauga County.
