NCSHP Trooper Involved In Shooting Tuesday (2016-12-28 12:09:48)

The North Carolina SBI is investigating a trooper-involved shooting that took place Tuesday afternoon in Gastonia.

On December 27th at approximately 3:10 p.m., a State Highway Patrol Trooper stopped a Honda passenger vehicle for a traffic violation on West Franklin Blvd in Gastonia.  WSOC-TV reports 31-year-old Jeremy Lewis tried to flee the scene after Trooper Christopher Wade discovered he was wanted for a probation violation.

Gaston County District Attorney Locke Bell said Lewis tried to drive up an embankment, but then started reversing toward Trooper Wade and that’s when Wade opened fire. Authorities confirmed that Wade was assaulted by the vehicle. WSOC reports that Lewis was shot and airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he is expected to recover. Trooper Wade was also transported to an area hospital and sources said he is expected to be OK.

“This incident again reminds us of the dangers our Troopers face every day while trying to keep us safe,” said Colonel Bill Grey, commander of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. “While we are saddened that the driver was injured, I am thankful that our member was not hurt.”

At the request of the Highway Patrol, the SBI is conducting the investigation.  Trooper Wade has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation as is standard operating procedure in any Patrol involved shooting.
