Slow Start Dooms Mountaineers in Setback to DePaul (2016-11-12 14:34:01)

CHICAGO - Turnovers, early foul trouble, and a hot-shooting DePaul squad proved to be too much for Appalachian State women’s basketball in a 99-58 setback Friday evening on the first day of the Maggie Dixon Classic at McGrath-Phillips Arena.

App State will play Gardner-Webb on Saturday in the third-place game at 7 p.m. (ET). The hosts and UAB will decide the championship later at 9 p.m. (ET).

Madi Story and Q Murray  both scored a team-high 11 points while Story added six boards and two assists. Murray drained two 3-pointers for a team best. Bayley Plummer grabbed a team-high seven rebounds off the bench. Brooklyn Allen came off the bench to score nine points on three shots and three free throws, getting to the line nine times.

No. 21DePaul capitalized on 32 App State (0-1) turnovers scoring 35 points off the miscues, while App State faced early foul trouble as seven student-athletes picked up two fouls and two of those with three fouls in the first half.

The Blue Demons scored the first 10 points of the contest and never looked back never succeeding their advantage below double-digits.

Despite the score, the Apps never showed a lack of effort, outscoring the Blue Demons, 38-34, in the second half and holding the hosts to 59.5 percent shooting from the floor (41.7 percent in the first half). The newcomers scored 30 of the team's 58 points, and Appalachian would go to the line 34 times.
