Watauga Sheriff's Office Works To Hire SROs (2018-11-27 15:56:18)

The Watauga County Sheriff's Office plans to have two new school resource officers in Watauga County Schools by early next year.

The Watauga Democrat reports the positions are funded by a grant from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and matching funds from the Watauga County Board of Commissioners.

According to the report, there are currently no specific assignments for the two new positions, but the officers will split time between schools in the county that do not already have an SRO on duty.

Some of the general duties of the new officers will include protecting students, staff, visitors and property of the school; investigating criminal activity on school property; assisting other law enforcement agencies and patrolling school campuses.
