Mark Benjamin Calhoun, 16, of Newland, North Carolina passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2017.

He was born on February 13, 2001 in Linville (Avery County), North Carolina, the son of Kenny Calhoun and Kim Carpenter Calhoun of Newland.
Mark was proud to be a student at Mayland Early College, where he excelled academically and was a member of the National Honor Society. He enjoyed being outdoors, riding his four wheeler, weightlifting, restoring small engines, woodworking and was a blue belt in Shito-Ryu karate.
Mark was a baptized believer in his Savior, Jesus Christ and enjoyed attending Foscoe Christian Church. He had a servant’s heart and watched for opportunities to help a neighbor or the community, not only volunteering, but leading others around him in projects with a steady hand.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Earl Carpenter Jr. and uncle, Ferrell Calhoun.
In addition to his parents, Mark leaves behind to cherish his memory his sisters, Jennifer (Zack) Deyo of Hillsborough, NC, Laura (Aaron) Berryman of Newland, NC, Sarah Calhoun of Raleigh, NC; niece, Brenna Berryman of Newland; nephews, Malachi Berryman of Newland, Lucas Deyo of Hillsborough; maternal grandmother, Mildred Carpenter of Newland; paternal grandparents, Carlos and Evelyn Calhoun of Newland; aunt, Wanda Pritchard of Newland; uncle, Stanley (Nena) Carpenter of Newland.
A Celebration of Mark's Life will take place at the Foscoe Christian Church's current meeting site, 141 Leigh Ln, Boone, NC 28607 beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 18, 2017.
The family will receive friends at the church from 12:00 noon until 1:45 p.m.
