WHS Indoor Track Opens Season.... (2018-11-21 17:35:24)

WINSTON-SALEM - The Watauga High boy's and girl's indoor track teams got things going on Tuesday night at the H.O.T. Turkey Meet at the JDL FastTrack.

The WHS girls turned in a fourth place finish with 59 points; the WHS boys were eighth with 47 points.

Sophia Ritter, who was a sixth-place finisher at the 3A State Cross Country Championships on November 3, picked up right where she left off by winning the girl's 1,600-meter run in 5:25.53. Teammates Sidra Miller finished third in 5:43.93. Riley Fowler was fourth in 5:44.08.

Avery Cannon paced the WHS boys with a second-place finish in the 1,600 (4:33.51). He finished just .41 seconds behind the winner, Tafton Baker of Ashe County, who won the event in 4:33.10.

Ethan Turner of the Pioneers finished third in the 1,600 in 4:43.74, and Caleb Coatney was fourth in 4:44.87.

Caroline Edwards of the Pioneers turned in a third-place finish in the girl's 1,000-meter run (3:25.98). Emma Tzotschew was fourth in 3:28.58. Van Small of the Pioneers finished third in the boy's 1,000 (2:56.10.

Zoe Schell and Maura Colderon of Ashe County both had a top-10 finish in the girl's 3,200-meter run. Schell finished fourth in 13:57.80; Colderon finished sixth in 15:10.50.

The WHS girls (Callie Holder, Isabella Sibaja, Annie Veno and Abby Makdad) had a sixth-place finish in the 4x800-meter relay (12:22.38). The WHS 4X400-meter relay team (Emma Brown, Mary Louise Sprague, Olivia Nicklaw and Bailey Price-Whitehead) finished fifth in 4:42.44.

The WHS boys (Micah Rushin, Small, Ethan Cannon and Hastings Holt) had a sixth-place finish in the 4x800 (10:07.98). The WHS boys (Coatney, Alex Freeman, Small and Asa Markus) turned in a third-place finish in the 4x400 (3:54.22.

The Ashe County girls (Mahaley Cronk, an All-Stater in girl's cross country, Malorie Eller, Olivia Randolph and Schell) won the girl's 4x800 relay in 11:01.07, besting the field by 15 seconds. The 4x400 relay team (Alexis Blevins, Malorie Eller, Cronk and Randolph) finished seventh in 4:47.85.

Josh Hardin of the Huskies finished third in the boy's 55-meter dash (6.71). He finished three-tenths of a second behind the winner, Jayden Chappelle of Berry Academy, who won the race in 6.68 seconds. Jaedon Barnett of Greensboro-Page finished second in 6.69.

Teamwise, the Huskies girls finished seventh with 39 points; the boys were sixth with 50 points. Parkland won the girl's meet with 159 points, Jamestown-Ragsdale won the boy's meet with 79 points.

NOTES: Sophia Ritter, Avery Cannon and Ethan Turner of the Pioneers will be competing in the Foot Locker Cross Country South Regional Championships Saturday at McAlpine Park in Charlotte. The girl's championship race starts at 10 a.m., the boy's championship race begins at 10:40 a.m.
