Schwarz Inks Two Student-Athletes for Spring Season (2018-11-21 21:19:41)

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's tennis head coach Craig Schwartz signed two student-athletes for the spring in Afonso Viana and Bence Tamas.

Viana and Tamas are the second and third players that Schwartz has signed since becoming the head coach in the summer. Zion Heaven was the first signee of the Schwartz era. Appalachian will head into the spring slate with 10 student-athletes.

The Apps' first match of the spring is on Jan. 19 at ETSU.

"Afonso and Bence are going to be great additions to our program this spring," head coach Craig Schwartz said. "They will both make an immediate impact on and off the court. I look forward to working with them and elevate
their game to the next level. Throughout the recruiting process, both young men proved to me that they are focused and determined to be successful college tennis players for App State. I am excited and can't wait to have them here on campus.

Afonso Viana | Portugal | 5'11
A 12 on the UTR (Universal Tennis Rating) in singles and doubles, Viana has a total of 14 regional championships, two national doubles titles and a pair of vice-championships. Viana's best ranking in the European tennis rankings was 55th.
He helped his national team capture a third-place finish in the B14 Europe Summer Cup and advanced to the B14 ITF World Finals with the junior national team. Viana will major in management at App State. He plans to receive his MBA after
graduation. He enjoys playing soccer and the piano.

Bence Tamas | Budapest, Hungary | 6'0
Like his future teammate, Tamas is a 12 on the UTR scale. Tamas was his club's Player of the Year in 2016, while he also received an athletic scholarship. Tamas will major in business administration when he arrives in App. He enjoys watching movies.
