Blue Ridge Energy Rates Likely To Increase Next Year (2018-11-14 16:25:30)

Blue Ridge Energy customers might see a rate increase starting next October.

The Watauga Democrat reports there is likely a need for at least a 3 percent increase due to the construction of a $25 million, 230-kilovolt line that runs from Horse Gap in Ashe County to the Rutherwood community in Boone.

According to the report, a substation at the end of the line will cost an extra $15 million.

The purpose of the project is to replace an old line that was built over 50 years ago and is due for an upgrade.

The entire project will take an estimated 4 to 5 years.

A more formal announcement with more details about the rate increase will be made next summer.

This would be Blue Ridge Energy’s first rate increase since 2013.
