Tractor Trailer Hits Three Cars In US 421 Accident (2018-11-09 16:12:51)

A tractor trailer lost its brakes and hit three cars while traveling out of Boone on Highway 421 near the Watauga and Wilkes County line.

The Watauga Democrat reports the accident happened around 9:45 Wednesday morning, and a portion of the highway had to be shut down for more than 5 hours.

According to the report, all four vehicles in the accident were totaled, and all drivers were injured, but none suffered any critical injuries.

The State Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Enforcement Administration determined that brake failure is part of the reason for the accident, but speed is also believed to have been a factor.

The tractor trailer was traveling an estimated 65 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone.

The driver, 48-year-old Tyrone Griddle, was charged with careless and reckless driving and faulty brakes.
