Ashe County Schools was awarded a School Mental Health Personnel Grant of more than $68,000.

The Ashe Post and Times reports the grant will be used to hire Brittany Perry as a school social worker.

According to the report, Perry is currently with the Alleghany Department of Social Services, but will begin in her new position with Ashe County Schools on October 29th.

The job is a one year position that will be only be continued if a report outlining Perry’s impact is submitted by Ashe County Schools in April.

The school system stated it’s confident the position will be continued because of the major need to help students with mental health issues and students living in poverty in the county.
