Betty Gwaltney Mitchell, age 86, of St. Augustine, Florida, formerly of North Wilkesboro, passed away Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at Westminister Retirement Community in St. Augustine.

Mrs. Mitchell was born February 25, 1932 in Alexander County to Frank T. and Beatrice H. Gwaltney of Vashti, NC. During her life Betty was a graduate of Hiddenite High School and attended Clevenger Business College. Prior to her marriage to Mr. Mitchell she was an employee at Northwestern Bank. She was a devoted wife and mother. In her community she served several years as a board member for the North Wilkesboro School Board and was a volunteer at Wilkes Community College with the Eddie Merle Watson Garden for the Senses during the early years of Merlefest. Additionally, Betty traveled extensively and was also an avid gardener. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William G. Mitchell, Sr.; and a brother, Owen E. Gwaltney.

Betty is survived by her son, William G. “Bill” Mitchell, Jr. and wife Rosemary of Meridianville, Alabama; her daughter, Mary Anne Metzger and husband Philip of Jacksonville Beach, Florida; brother, George R. Gwaltney of Hickory; sister, Patti Ferguson of Taylorsville; grandchildren, William “Garrett” Mitchell III and wife Anna of Boerne, Texas, Anna Maria Mitchell of Madison, Madison, Alabama, Derrick Metzger of Mill Valley, California and Whitney Metzger of Bozeman, Montana; six great grandchildren; four nieces, three nephews, along with several grand nieces and nephews.
