Watauga Commissioners Approve Pay Plan For County Staff (2017-12-20 17:15:50)

The Watauga County Commissioners have approved a new pay plan for county employees.

The Watauga Democrat reports Springsted Incorporated was contracted by the county and conducted a study of 13 benchmark communities to review and compare employee pay, including Ashe, Caldwell and Wilkes Counties, Appalachian State University, and the towns of Lenoir and Boone and Watauga County Schools.

According to the report, Watauga staff wages were about 4% below average.

Ann Antonsen, vice president consultant for Springsted, presented three options to Commissioners for their consideration, and recommended an option that gives a 0.5 percent increase for each year of service in a staff member's current position.

According to the report, the annual cost to the county would be a bit more than $569,000 - that's about 5 percent of the county’s annual payroll.
