Men's Soccer Records First Shutout of Season in Homecoming Win over Milligan

BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College men's soccer team defeated Milligan on Homecoming Saturday (Oct. 6) 3-0 to record its first shutout of the season.

Game Summary - The Bobcats struck first in the fifth minute when Fredrik Haave lofted a long ball downfield that was corralled by Pol Vassart. Vassart controlled the pass, beat his defender and rifled a shot that caught the hands of Milligan keeper Andrew Russell before trickling over the goal line for his 11th of the season. The teams would go back and forth until the half and LMC would hold the lead at the break. The Bobcats would pad their lead in the 52nd minute when a failed clear left the ball on the foot of Haave and Milligan keeper Russell way out of his net. Haave sized up the strike and tucked it inside the far post for his second of the season unassisted to make it 2-0. LMC would put the match at its final score when Vassart was taken down in the box. The senior netted his conference-leading 12th of the year to cement the victory. LMC would play stingy defense in the remaining minutes to preserve the shutout.

Stats Rundown – LMC out-shot Milligan 21-5 in the contest including 7-2 in shots on goal. Haave totaled four shots on the day, while Vassart and Agustin Ortiz each registered three. Three other Bobcats recorded two shots in the match, while another five each tallied one. LMC also earned five corner kicks to Milligan's two. Anton Sundstrom (5-4-1) and Logan Greene combined for the shutout.

Up Next - The Bobcats have a quick turnaround after today's win, playing the makeup game against Chowan from Sept. 15 on Monday (Oct. 8). Kickoff is slated for 4:30 p.m.
