43 Mountaineers Recognized as Scholar Athletes

BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State Athletics continues to prove that Mountaineer student-athletes succeed in the classroom. Forty-three App State student-athletes who graduated within the past year earned the title of "scholar-athlete" by graduating with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Amidst the weekend's Homecoming festivities, 25 of the 43 scholar-athletes were recognized on the football field before kickoff of the win against South Alabama. During this special ring ceremony, App State student-athletes shook the hands of several special guests, including Chancellor Sheri Everts and Director of Athletics Doug Gillin.

In addition to the recognition of these high-achieving student-athletes, Sarah Peatross was announced as the winner of the Brakefield Academic Award. The honor is given each semester to the student-athlete who graduated with the highest GPA. Peatross, who played on the women's soccer team, graduated with a 4.0 GPA in Elementary Education.

The award was established by legendary Appalachian football coach Jim Brakefield and his wife, Eloise. A scholarship fund continues in their names through the former student-athletes who played for Coach Brakefield, along with friends of the Brakefield family.

The 43 scholar-athletes contributed to a historic year in the classroom for App State Athletics. Twenty teams combined for a cumulative GPA of 3.12, the highest ever recorded in school history. The spring semester was also the 12th consecutive semester with a GPA above 3.0 for the Mountaineers.

App State graduated 20 student-athletes in December 2017 and 64 student-athletes in May 2018, including five student-athletes who received master's degrees.
