Watauga Rec Center Groundbreaking Set For Oct. 16 (2018-09-20 14:56:51)

The Watauga County Board of Commissioners received the latest update on the county recreation center at its regular third Tuesday meeting.

Watauga Recreation Center architect, Chad Roberson with Clark Nexsen, told the board that the center is now priced at $38 million dollars, a slight increase of what was initially stated.

Harper Construction is heading up the project, and they stated that more than 15 percent of construction bids have been given to local builders.

Commissioner Perry Yates expressed his gratitude on keeping the project as local as possible.

“This board’s been really huge on using local people for this project, and so far, you guys are the only ones that have ever put forth the effort to use local people like you have, and I appreciate that, and I know this board does,” said Yates.

The rec center is estimated to be completed by March of 2020. Demolition is expected to begin soon, and a groundbreaking ceremony is being planned for October 16th.
