Newland Alderman Discuss Burning Ban (2016-12-15 14:21:45)

The Newland Board of Aldermen discussed a possible burn ban in the town limits at the December 6th regular meeting.

The Avery Journal reports Alderman Donetta McKinney told the board that the town receives complaints about the burning of Christmas greenery after the holiday season, mainly from older citizens affected by the smoke.

Town Attorney Joe Seegers said there are a number of towns that ban open burning and that any ordinance would have to be clear about what is permitted. He said any such ordinance would likely not be enforceable this winter.

The Avery Journal reported that Aldermen also discussed the possibility of an increase of five percent in water rates. The board previously discussed raising rates to adjust for chemical costs and energy rates, during budget talks in July. No action was taken.
