TAYLORSVILLE - Alexander Central High senior Dawson Elder has made a verbal commitment to attend Western Carolina University to play baseball next season.

Elder appeared in seven games for the Cougars last spring. He made six starts and tossed four complete games. He was 4-0 with a 1.97 earned-run-average. He gave up nine earned runs in 32 innings with 41 strikeouts and 15 walks.

The Cougarss, who were 22-8 last season, won the Northwestern Conference Tournament, and they reached the third round of the state playoffs before they were eliminated by Shelby-Crest, 2-1.

The Cougars lost 10 seniors to graduation lat spring. Former Watauga High baseball coach Pete Hardee, who won his 400th career game last season, will begin his fourth season with the Cougars. He's 54-31 at Alexander Central.
