Watauga Commissioners Hold Public Hearing On Rec Center (2018-08-23 15:12:26)

The Watauga County Board of Commissioners held a public hearing Tuesday afternoon on Boone’s proposed community recreation center.

At the hearing, 22 High Country citizens voiced their opinions.

Four people against the recreation center stated their concerns on increased traffic in the area and tax increase due to the high cost of the project.

Supporting voices for the center highlighted the need for indoor recreation during winter months and for children.

Wright Tilley of the Watauga County Tourism Development Association was one of 18 people to voice his support for the project.

“The top two non-positive things that keep coming back on surveys are first, that we need more places for indoor activities when the weather is bad," said Tilley. "The second one is that we need more activities for the teens and young adults. This recreation center will address both of those.”

Commissioner Perry Yates also voiced his support for the recreation center, and said he thinks it’s time for the board to move forward with the project.
