Dr. Loyd H. Hilton (2018-08-20 13:24:00)

Dr. Loyd H. Hilton, professor emeritus of English at Appalachian State University, who had a distinguished twenty-four-year career as chairperson of its English Department, died in Blowing Rock, North Carolina on Friday, August 17, 2018.

Loyd Harold Hilton, youngest of three sons of Joseph Wheeler and Ethel Loyd Hilton, was born April 15, 1927, in Afton, TX.

Dr. Hilton graduated with the B.A. in English from Wayland College in 1953. In 1957, he received the M.A. in English from Texas Technological University, and the Ph.D in 1961 from the University of Texas at Austin. He taught at Wayland College from 1957-59 and 1961-64 and at Stetson University from 1964-69.

Dr. Hilton joined the English Department at Appalachian State University in 1969 and served as its chairperson for the next twenty-four years. His tenure as chairperson was notable for his gathering an outstanding faculty and his fair and encouraging treatment of students and colleagues. The English Department's award for outstanding graduate is named for him. Dr. Hilton served two terms as Appalachian's delegate to the University of North Carolina Faculty Assembly and was a member of Appalachian's graduate faculty. He was a strong supporter of the Appalachian Journal, the University's flagship regional studies review, and served on its advisory board from 1972-1992. He was appointed Professor Emeritus of English in 1992.

Dr. Hilton is survived by his wife, Susan Wilson Hilton of Blowing Rock, his son, Dr. James Hilton, and his wife, Molly, of Dexter, MI, and their children, Michael and Meghan; and his daughter, Katherine, and her husband, Seth Jason, of Edgewater, MD.

A memorial service for Dr. Hilton will be held a Friday, August 24, 2018 at 2:00 o’clock at St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church in Blowing Rock. The Reverend Karla Woggon will offciate.

The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

The family asks for no flowers. Friends may contribute memorials by writing checks to the ASU Foundation with “Loyd Hilton Endowment in English” in the memo line and mailing them to Appalachian State University, University Advancement, Attn: Carey Fissel, ASU Box 32176, Boone, NC 28608.
