Progress Continues On U.S. 221 Widening Project (2018-08-17 15:48:34)

The U.S. 221 widening project continues to make progress.

The Ashe Post and Times reports that more work has been done on four of the five sections of the 16-mile, $154 million project between Deep Gap and Jefferson.

According to the report, most of the widening process involves smoothing out curves and reducing grade inclines.

To date, the 4.6-mile A and B sections are about 83 percent complete. The 4-mile section C is about 46 percent complete. The 4-mile section D is about 93 percent complete. Construction will not begin on the 3.5-mile section E until September of 2019.

Sections A through D are expected to be complete by the end of 2020, but there is no set completion date for the entire project at this time.
