Pioneers Favored To Win NWC Crown.... (2018-08-11 14:18:26)

MORGANTON - The Watauga High football team, which has known nothing but success under head coach Ryan Habich, now in his sixth season at the helm, is among the favorites to win the Northwestern Conference championship this season, according to a preseason NWC Coaches Poll released by the Morganton News Herald.

It that comes to fruition, it would be WHS' first conference title in football since 2007, when the Pioneers shared the championship with East Burke and Asheville-Reynolds in the old NWC 4A Conference. WHS was also the No. 1 seed in the 4A West Playoffs that season and lost to Mount Tabor in the state semifinals.

And Habich has made the Pioneers a legitimate power during his tenure. During his stay as head coach, the Pioneers have gone an impressive 43-18. That's WHS best run since the 1970s.

The Pioneers were chosen to share to conference championship with Alexander Central, but the Pioneers received four first-place votes compared to Alexander Central, which only received two. Freedom, which also received two first-place votes, has been selected to finish third.

The Pioneers open the season at Asheville-Roberson next Friday night, August 17. Coverage begins at 6:30 p.m., on WATA 1450 AM/96.5 FM.
