North Carolinians Receive Scam Emails (2018-08-13 15:19:21)

The North Carolina Attorney General’s Office is advising North Carolinians not to fall for email extortion.

The office reports they have seen a string of email scams in the past few weeks.

Scammers are contacting people and claiming that they have a password for their email account. The passwords look familiar enough to make the email scam seem credible.

Scammers are saying they’ve used the password to remotely access personal webcams and secretly videotape people. Scammers are threatening to release the videos unless they are paid.

If you receive this email, do not respond or send money. Report the email to the North Carolina Department of Justice Consumer Protection Division by calling 1-877-5-NO-SCAM, or visit
